Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Formed Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
