European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
