Cancellieri Demonstrates Brief Sparks of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Struggling Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had allowed 10 goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in an ongoing feud with club owner Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Coming Unstitched?

Had their campaign falling apart, or did there exist a thread maintaining its structure in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, only for him to later acknowledge that the board had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Rumours that he could resign were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.

Lazio were just as chaotic in their performances as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other first five games, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, it has been hard to ascertain if progress is being made or self-destructing.

Cancellieri's Surprising Presence

At least one man remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He completed the last one at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, his parent club were attempting to remain there temporarily. The transfer ban forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad lacking backup options.

He signed in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."

Finding His Natural Fit

It's possible the coach was still trying to work out the nature of the player's talent. Originally described as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
