Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
